Mont Louis, Pyrenees Orientales

  • Old fortified town of Mont Louis

The old fortified town of Mont Louis was built under Louis XIV by Vauban, from 1679 to 1681, in the crossroads of the valleys of Segre, the Aude, and the Tet. Mont Louis played a big role in the Treaty of Pyrenees and the French Revolution.

Of the tray on which Mont Louis is built, the sight extends over all the chain of the Pyrenees, going from the Canigou in the Serra Del Cadi. Ramparts, bastions half-moons and talutees curtains (characteristics of Vauban's architecture), were planted by trees of any essences, form a magnificent shaded, well exposed walk, where one can make a cure of fresh air and rest in front of a magnificent panorama.

The church dating 1736, is built by the Military engineering on the model of the chapel of the Citadel.

The Well of the Convict, situated in the citadel, served for feeding with water defenders in case of seat. Remarkable realization of the 18th century, wooden and in excellent state of conservation. Monument in the glory of the General Dagobert (1736-1794), died in Puigcerda (Spain) having conquered Cerdagne.

Visit too the monument of the General Gilles (20th century), the chapel in the citadel dating 1678 and the solar furnace, built in 1949 by the professor Whirlwind, of Sorbonne.
