The province of Teruel, in the south of Aragon, is home to most of the Sistema Iberico mountain range area. Its geography offers abundant contrasts between the plains surrounding Teruel city and mountainous areas such as Gudar, Albarracin or Javalambre. The traces of its rich past are found in Teruel in the form of many archaeological remains, cave paintings, Iberian and Roman sites and the tracks of dinosaurs.
Teruel is also a storehouse of some of the best Mudejar architecture you will find anywhere, and nearby Albarracin is a medieval treat. If you have kids along, a visit to Dinopolis, a large modern dinosaur theme park is obligatory. The mountains of El Maestrazgo, northeast of Teruel, are an area of great variety and striking, often wild, beauty, with their severe peaks, deep gorges and lush meadows.
