The Basque Country spans both sides of the French-Spanish border. Gipuzkoa, Vizcaya y Alava provinces, with a population of 2,098,055 inhabitants make up the Spanish Basque Country which shares character and heritage with the French Basque Country (included in Pyrenees Atlantiques together with Bearn).
The Basque language, the Euskara, is clamed to be the earliest of European Languages. In Spain, since 1979 the Basque Country has a Statute of Autonomy that facilitates it to have a Basque Government and a Basque Parliament. The Basque Country is world renowed for the quality of its traditional cuisine as well as for the imagination of its nouvelle cuisine.
