The Aragones Pyrenees
The Aragonese Pyrenees form the central region of Spanish Pyrenees in Huesca, in the northern Aragon province. Being so close to the mountains, it is ideal for Pyrenees summer Trekking and winter Skiing. The natural area formed by the Pyrenees is one of the most valuable assests in Aragon.
Two mountain formations are distinguished in the Alto Aragon, which parallel to each other cross it from west to east: the Pyrenees and the Pre-Pyrenees. In the most most northern we can find the impressive granite ridges of the Maladetas and Balaitus, the deep valleys of Monte Perdido and the extensive woods of the western valleys of Anso, Echo y Aragues.
The Pre-Pyrenees are comprised of a series of mountain ranges such as the Mallos de Riglos and the Sierra de Guara.
Zaragoza City
Zaragoza (Saragossa), the capital of Aragon, has all the attractions of a modern, populous city with excellent avenues, such as that of La Independencia, Sagasta, Gran Via... and squares, such as that of Paraiso, Los Sitios...
Attractions include the Aljaferia castle, the greatest Moorish edifice outside Andalucia, the Roman Forum and Theatre of ancient Caesaraugusta, and El Pilar, one of the most famous sanctuaries of the Virgin Mary in the world.
Other important sights are the old Cathedral, La Seo, a magnificient 14th century church with its famous Museum of Trapestries. Especially interesting are the estately houses and magnificient palaces in the city.
The most important Zaragoza museums are the Museum of Fine Arts, with paintings of early aragonese artists and of El Greco, Ribera and Goya, and the Camon Aznar Museum, with paintings ranging from Rubens, Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Velazquez and Goya to Renoir, Manet and Sorolla.
Zaragoza Province
The transition area between the Ebro valley and the Pyrenees mountains includes a large section of the Province of Zaragoza, which reaches as far as the valleys of Anso and El Roncal in the north and penetrates into Catalonia terrain in the east.
The scenery of the Province of Zaragoza is very varied: from the spurs of the Pyrenees to the high, snow-capped peaks of El Moncayo in the Iberian mountains, from the extensive wheat-growing plains of Las Cinco Villas and the sober Monegros (black mountains) to the fertile valleys of the Gallego, the Jalon and the Jiloca.
Teruel
The province of Teruel, in the south of Aragon, is home to most of the Sistema Iberico mountain range area. Its geography offers abundant contrasts between the plains surrounding Teruel city and mountainous areas such as Gudar, Albarracin or Javalambre.
The traces of its rich past are found in Teruel in the form of many archaeological remains, cave paintings, Iberian and Roman sites and the tracks of dinosaurs.
Teruel is also a storehouse of some of the best Mudejar architecture you will find anywhere, and nearby Albarracin is a medieval treat. If you have kids along, a visit to Dinopolis, a large modern dinosaur theme park is obligatory.
The mountains of El Maestrazgo, northeast of Teruel, are an area of great variety and striking, often wild, beauty, with their severe peaks, deep gorges and lush meadows.
