Baltarga is quoted in 891 AD, as the parish of Biltarga. Between the Tossal de Baltarga (1191m) and the riverside of the Segre. There we can find the Church of Sant Andreu, Romanesque. Its mural paintings can be seen at the Diocese’s museum of Seu D’Urgell; and the front of the church (13th Century) at the Museum of National art of Catalonia, Barcelona. Baltarga’s name comes from the Iberian "bitllar" (tiny thing, sand grain); with the suffix –ga (lack, shortage). Therefore, Biltarga may refer to the shortage of stones or sand.
