Bridge Pavilion
Zaha Hadid and Arup have been selected for the preliminary project of the Pavilion Bridge for the Zaragoza Expo 2008, one of the central features of the Exhibition. The theme of the concept is 'Water for Development'.
This will be an 'aesthetic and emotional' bridge for pedestrians crossing the River Ebro to access the Expo Zaragoza 2008. Through the bridge, pedestrians will visit three exhibitions relating to the management of water.
The Pavilion Bridge passes obliquely over the channel of the River Ebro, running very close to the Third Millennium Bridge. It is slightly curved in design and its gentle, flowing forms connect the axis of the intermodal station boulevard with the area of the conference hall within the expo site.
Its cross-section is diamond-shaped, comprising four vaults that serve as structural elements and exhibition zones and cover a surface area of 7000m². The structural base of the Pavilion Bridge will be made of concrete. For the envelope of the building a material composed of glass and plastic, inspired by the scales of a shark, is being investigated. The objective is to create a natural microclimate inside, as the exhibitions will be closed to protect visitors from outside climate conditions.
The execution of the Pavilion Bridge is estimated at two years and has an initial budget of 25 million euro. After the Expo 2008, the infrastructure will house a museum on technologies and water.
