Pavilion of Spain

  • Pavilion of Spain

The project, committed to ethical architecture in pursuit of environmental protection and sustainable development, is to be an artificial forest made of columns and glass.

The pavilion is designed to save energy and to use environmentally friendly materials and renewable energy sources. The pavilion will have its own microclimate in which all the possibilities of an architecture committed to sustainable development can be expressed. The entire building is dedicated to sustainable development.

The vertical components will have metals cores sheathed with standardised ceramic tiles which absorb water on contact. Thus the air current will generate a microclimate as air flows past them. The roof, supported by these columns, will house energy saving systems, which graduate the light by reflecting the sunrays on the pillars and the surface of the water at the base.

Water at the Origins

The “Water at the Origins” exhibit will feature an audiovisual presentation to be projected on the pavilion’s circular dome. It will show how water appeared in the universe and underline its importance on our planet.

Water on the Earth

The “Water on the Earth” display will focus on such concepts as the nature of water as a molecule, the solar system, and the “blue planet”, water’s different properties and states, and associated phenomena such as the hydrological cycle, ecosystems, and its importance to life.

Water in Spain

“Water in Spain” will address surface water and river basins, subterranean water, and the use, re-use, and management of water supplies, whose quantity and quality are by no means unlimited or assured.

Adviser to the water exhibitions is Dr. Juan Pérez Mercader, the head of Madrid’s Astrobiology Institute. The exhibitions will also draw on the expertise of Spain’s Geological and Mining Institute, the Hydrographical Studies Centre, the Mediterranean Water Basins Institute.

Climate Change

The exhibition dealing with the Earth’s changing climate will offer the latest research data, and some of the leading international authorities on this subject will participate. The issue will be considered in the context of geological and biological time, as well as that of human existence, and in terms of the laws of nature, and how the interactions of different factors cause climate change.

Architecture and Sustainable Development

This exhibition will show twelve projects in which renowned Spanish and foreign offer their proposals for architecture that can contribute to sustainable development.

Other Spaces

The Pavilion will also feature didactic playrooms for the younger visitors to the Expo. In addition, it will have a shop, and a Spanish haute cuisine restaurant. Lastly, there will be an amphitheatre for lectures and seminars. Adjacent to the amphitheatre there will be a VIP reception hall.
