The traditional Basque-style Hotel Etxegana is set in the green and unspoilt Gorbeia Nature Reserve, with views of the mountains and century-old woods, around 40 mins from Bilbao and 35 mins from Vitoria-Gasteiz. Covered in pastureland the Gorbeia mountain is home to sheep, horses, deer and wild boar, and the whole area is abundant with ancient woodland rich in fauna and flora. This recently built hotel has been constructed following traditional Basque custom so that its stone and wooden exterior blends in well with the countryside and does not detract from one of the region's most loveliest areas.
Hotel offers 13 beautifully furnished rooms with great views of the mountains, all of them with full equipped bathroom, hydromassage baths and lounges, air-conditioning, piped music, internet access, satellite television and telephone. The rooms have been lovingly decorated with antique English and French furniture, as well as exotic pieces collected by the owners from far-flung places. Each of the floors is decorated in a different style: Colonial, Victorian and French Provenzal.
There is a handicapped access, a meeting room, audiovisual equipment as well as other complementary services organised by the hotel, with the aim of making your stay as pleasant as possible. The restaurant excellent home-cooked meals and wine selection respects the tastes and flavours of the Basque Country. It has an idyllic setting where you can enjoy marvellous scenic views. Hotel Etxegana is off the main road (N240) from Vitoria-Gasteiz to Bilbao. It is not easy to find but turn off the road into the village of Zeanuri and look for signs for the hotel and Ipinaburu. The outlook of the hotel is across to some beautiful hills and the most noticeable aspect was the peace and quiet save for farm animals. We recommend you to visit the Guggenheim and explore the beaches North east of Bilbao - Mundaka is particularly beautiful, also the walk to the church at Gaztelugatxe which gives you views all along the Basque Coast.
Hotel Etxegana is a wonderful place to practise a wide range of sports including walking through the Gorbeia Nature Reserve, horse riding (15 km from the hotel), bike rental and 4×4 routes, golf (15 km away) and water sports (sailing, jet skis, waterskiing). Zeanuri is a popular point of departure for groups of mountaineers who wish to climb Gorbeia, at 1481 m above sea level and which has an 18 m cross on its peak, ordered by Pope Leon XIII to commemorate the arrival of the 20th Century. Today, one can still find flocks of sheep, “potokas” or Basque horses…
Zeanuri and the neighbouring area of Duranguesado were part of an ancestral route of the Basque mythology and the alleged site of some of the most famous gatherings of witches or akelarres in the Basque Country. Zeanuri preserves a large heritage of large traditional country houses or “caserios” , the Axpe Laurel Palace and chapels such as San Lorenzo, Santa Agueda, San Blas and Andra Mari. The area offers a rich gastronomy, where we discover some delicious cheeses, often the perfect gift, as well as local craftsmanship in the form of wickerwork and medicinal plants.
